CMI or Payzone? The question comes up every time a Moroccan entrepreneur builds an online store.
These are the two main online payment gateways approved in Morocco. Choosing the wrong one could mean higher fees, a more complicated Shopify integration, and a less smooth payment experience for your customers.
Why this choice matters more than you think
In Morocco, online payment remains a friction point. Cart abandonment rates are high, consumer trust is building progressively. The payment gateway you choose is not a technical detail. It is a commercial decision that directly impacts your revenue.
Both CMI and Payzone are approved by Bank Al-Maghrib. Both accept Visa and Mastercard. But they differ on several key points.
CMI: the established reference
The Centre Monetique Interbancaire is the most widely used online payment solution in Morocco. Founded by the country's major banks, it has a solid infrastructure and established consumer recognition.
Strengths: Accepts international cards (including from Moroccans abroad). Available through most Moroccan banks. Shopify modules exist from Moroccan providers.
Weaknesses: Fees can be higher for low volumes. Limited payment page customization. Technical support can be slow. Advanced API integration requires an experienced developer.
Payzone: the serious alternative
Payzone is operated by HPS, a Moroccan company with over twenty years in payment solutions. Less known to consumers but well established in the banking world.
Strengths: Can be more cost-competitive depending on your bank and volume. Responsive French-language support. Good API documentation.
Weaknesses: Lower brand recognition than CMI. Narrower coverage of international cards. Fewer pre-built Shopify modules.
Direct comparison on the criteria that matter
Transaction fees. Rates vary by bank, volume, and sector. Payzone can offer better terms for small stores. CMI is often better at higher volumes. Never take the first offer without negotiating.
Shopify integration. CMI has more available modules and a larger community of Moroccan developers familiar with their API. Payzone is integrable but often requires more custom development.
Customer experience. Both redirect customers to a hosted payment page off your store. CMI has slightly higher brand recognition in Morocco, which helps conversion.
Transfer speed. Both are comparable, generally 48 to 72 business hours.
The practical recommendation
For a Moroccan store just starting out, CMI is the safest choice. Coverage is broad, Shopify modules exist, and brand recognition reassures customers.
If you are already a client of a Payzone partner bank and get better rate conditions, Payzone is a serious alternative. The rate difference on significant volume can represent several thousand dirhams in savings per year.
The best configuration for technically capable stores: offer both, with routing based on customer profile. More complex, but it maximizes payment success rates.
In all cases, coupling your online gateway with a cash-on-delivery option remains essential for the Moroccan market in 2026.
