Which e-commerce platform should you choose for your Moroccan store?

Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop: three very different platforms, each with its advantages. And many Moroccan entrepreneurs spend hours comparing them without finding a clear answer adapted to their specific situation.

Here is an honest comparison, contextualized for the Moroccan market.

Shopify

Shopify is a SaaS (Software as a Service) solution: you pay a monthly subscription and the platform handles hosting, security, and updates. You don't manage the technical side.

Strengths for the Moroccan market: simple interface, rich app ecosystem, proven scalability, native multi-currency and multilingual support, strong integrations with marketing tools (Meta, TikTok, Google).

Weaknesses: monthly cost ($29 to $79 per month depending on the plan), and Shopify Payments is not available in Morocco (you must integrate CMI or Payzone separately).

Ideal for: brands that want to focus on their product and marketing rather than technology, stores intended to grow, founders without technical skills.

WooCommerce

WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress site into an e-commerce store. WooCommerce itself is free, but you must pay for hosting, the theme, premium plugins, and maintenance.

Strengths: very flexible, full control over the code, many Moroccan developers available for customizations, potentially lower initial cost than Shopify.

Weaknesses: requires technical skills or a developer. Maintenance (updates, security, plugin compatibility) takes time and can cause problems. Less suited to rapid scaling without dedicated technical resources.

Ideal for: brands with very specific customization needs, founders with an in-house developer, projects where full code control is necessary.

PrestaShop

PrestaShop is an open-source solution, widely used in France and French-speaking Europe, with some popularity in Morocco.

Strengths: French solution, good French-speaking community, adapted for European and MENA markets.

Weaknesses: heavier to manage than Shopify, fewer resources than WooCommerce, less rich marketing integration ecosystem. Scaling can become complex.

Ideal for: stores with strong ties to local PrestaShop developers, or specific needs that PrestaShop covers better than alternatives.

Our recommendation for Moroccan stores

For 90% of the Moroccan brands we work with, Shopify is the best option. The ease of management, integrated advertising ecosystem, and scalability justify the monthly cost. The investment in technology is minimal, and the founder can focus on what creates value: product, marketing, customer.

The remaining 10% who choose WooCommerce generally do so for very specific customization reasons, or because they already have an existing WordPress site.
