Moroccan Residents Abroad (MRE) are a high-potential market segment for Moroccan brands. They have a strong cultural connection to Morocco, purchasing power that often exceeds local customers, and a nostalgia for Moroccan products and aesthetics they can't easily find in their country of residence.
Meta Ads is the most effective tool for reaching them. Here's how to build campaigns that work specifically for the Moroccan diaspora.
The logic of diaspora targeting on Meta
You can't directly target "MRE" as a category in Meta Ads. But you can build audiences that get very close by combining several signals.
Geographic signal: France, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Germany (or Canada for the North American diaspora).
Cultural and behavioral signals:
- People who have recently traveled to Morocco (travel behavior)
- People who speak Arabic (language parameter in Meta)
- Interests related to Morocco (Moroccan cuisine, Ramadan, Eid)
- Interest in Islamic or modest fashion
Lookalike audiences from your existing MRE buyers: if you already have customers in Europe, create a similar audience based on those customers. This is the most precise signal available.
The creatives that work for the Moroccan diaspora
Cultural connection is the most powerful lever. The creatives that perform best show products in a recognizable Moroccan context, use shared cultural references, and speak directly to the bicultural identity of the diaspora.
French-language copy works very well for MRE in France and Belgium. Some Franco-Moroccan creators mix French with a few words of Darija in their content to create a particular connection. Test both approaches.
Special occasions are strong moments for targeting MRE: Ramadan, Eid el-Fitr, Eid el-Adha, summer holidays in Morocco. These moments create specific purchase intent linked to cultural belonging.
How to structure your diaspora campaigns
Campaign 1: Prospecting. Geographic targeting (France + Belgium) + cultural signals. Objective: Sales or Traffic depending on your pixel's data volume. Budget: minimum 100-150 MAD per day for the algorithm to have enough volume.
Campaign 2: Retargeting. All people who visited your store from these countries but didn't purchase. Objective: Sales. Different message (urgency, social proof, special offer for first orders).
Campaign 3: Lookalike. If you have existing buyers in France or Belgium, create a 1-3% similar audience. This is generally the campaign that generates the best ROAS.
